Why it matters
The machine economy has moved from theory to transaction volume. More than 10 million x402 payments have now settled on the XRP Ledger, less than three months after the 1 million mark, according to RippleX Head of Engineering J. Ayo Akinyele. The latest 7-day run rate is 500,000 payments per day.
- Who is paying: mostly AI agents buying inference and data, with a growing set of x402 services in financial data, risk and credit.
- What changes: agents now discover, pay for and consume services on their own, with no human in the loop.
- What's missing: the apps, guardrails and credit rails that make agent spending safe and useful. That is what this hackathon builds.
Why XRPL
The XRP Ledger has run continuously since 2012 and was built for payments, which is what agents need most. Native features mean developers build on the ledger itself rather than stacking smart contracts on top.
- Machine-speed settlement: 3–5 second finality and fees of about $0.0002, so a single API call can be paid for profitably.
- Agent-ready payments: x402 on XRPL, built by t54.ai, lets agents settle in XRP or the RLUSD stablecoin.
- Native credit is arriving: a lending protocol and Single Asset Vaults are being added at the protocol level, with fixed-term loans for institutions. Currently in voting.
- Compliance built in: features like decentralized identity and permissioned domains suit regulated finance.
Why now
Two curves meet in October 2026: agent payments are compounding, and native on-chain credit is weeks from going live.
- Sept 30, 2026: the LendingProtocolV1_1 amendment entered validator voting. It is one of three amendments, with LendingProtocol and SingleAssetVault, that unlock native lending on mainnet.
- Oct 1, 2026: x402 volume on XRPL passed 10 million payments, 10x in under three months.
- Oct 24–25, 2026: builders ship agent and lending apps ahead of the protocol, not after it, then present them the week of Swell to Ripple, institutions and investors.
The next question for agents is not just how they pay, but whether they can borrow, lend and manage risk. The teams in this room will be among the first to answer it.

Four tracks
- Agentic Finance: AI agents that pay, earn and transact on-chain at machine speed.
- Lending & Borrowing: apps on the new XRPL Lending Protocol and Single Asset Vaults.
- Protocol Innovation: C++ and systems work on the ledger itself, after a 3-day Core Dev Bootcamp (Oct 20–22).
- Why Not: the open lane for any XRPL idea.
Track record: XRPL Commons' last hackathon, in Paris in 2026, drew 150 participants and shipped 52 projects; a third kept building afterwards.
Join the judging panel. We are holding one guest judge seat for a journalist or investor covering AI, payments or fintech. It is a front-row view of what agent-driven finance looks like before it hits the market, on a panel alongside Ripple, Mastercard and AWS. Judging happens at the final showcase on October 25.
About XRPL Commons
XRPL Commons is a non-profit, ecosystem-first home base for builders on the XRP Ledger. It runs the hackathons, education programs and the Aquarium incubator that take projects from first commit to scale, with a direct network of 4,000+ XRPL developers.
